Even in today's progressive swine industry, bacterial respiratory pathogens continue to cause problems. These problems have been exacerbated because of the development of multiple-site production systems. Three bacterial agents, Bordetella bronchiseptica, Pasteurella multocida, and Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae, are discussed in this article, which reviews clinical signs, lesions, and treatment/prevention programs for each organism. Also discussed are descriptions of bordetellosis, atrophic rhinitis, and pneumonic pasteurellosis in suckling piglets.
