Cervical and vaginal intraepithelial neoplasia in adolescents

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of cervical and vaginal intraepithelial neoplasia in adolescence. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Between January 1994 and December 1999, 3.483 cervicovaginal smears from girls ranging from 11 to 19 years old were taken to Laboratorio Fleury. Colposcopy, vaginoscopy and colposcopically directed biopsy were performed in 110 adolescents. RESULTS: Of the total 3.483 cervicovaginal smears, 155 (4.4 %) were considered abnormal. 93 % corresponded to LSIL and 7 % to HSIL. Histopathologic findings show CIN in 44.6 % of the cases. CONCLUSION Screening of cervical neoplasia among adolescents is essential to avoid the evolution of this disease for more severe degrees.
