The Economic and Environmental Impact of Olympic Games on Beijing

By constructing the system dynamics model of economic and environmental system of Beijing, this paper studied the Olympic Games' impact on Beijing. By trying to exclude the impact of Olympic Games, this paper identified the baseline of Beijing in terms of economic development, population increase, and resources consumption, which is named base scenario. This paper also identified the Olympic scenario with the consideration of Olympics' impact. Both scenarios have the time span from the year 1978 to the year 2015. Though comparison between the two scenarios, this paper draw conclusions that Olympic Games contributed to the economic growth of Beijing, and made Bejing's energy consumption intensity and water consumption intensity reduce faster than the base scenario. Within the time span of this model, these beneficial impacts caused by Olympic Games will not disappear The Olympic Games also caused a faster increase in Beijing population, but this trend will disappear after the Olympic Games. The Olympic Games directly increased the investment of Beijing, thus had an indirectly impact on Beijing GDP, population and resources consumption intensity.
