An investigation of the heat transfer phenomena between the hermetic reciprocating compressor components

A hermetic reciprocating compressor is the most effective component (90%) with respect to the energy consumption of the refrigerators. Detailed investigation studies on the compressor play an important role for contributing the overall efficiency increment of the compressors. In this study, heat transfer processes between the components of a hermetic reciprocating compressor were studied theoretically and experimentally. Compressor is divided into different control volumes (Shell, suction /discharge mufflers/pipes/plenums, cylinder, lubricant, electrical motor, body, inner gas etc) for determining the heat transfer characteristics between these control volumes theoretically. In the experimental part of the study, conceptual designs on the components of the hermetic compressor were made to examine the effects on the heat transfer characteristics between the components and also compressor performance. The results of the theoretical and experimental studies are used for investigating the network including conduction, convection and radiation forms of heat transfer inside the compressor. Generated heat transfer network helps to characterize the thermal functions of the main components which leads to the new and better compressor designs.
