Tourism has been accorded industry status, by Indian government realizing its immense potential to facilitate international tourists and also its earning capability. Tourism also is a major employment generating industry in India employing, about 10 million people directly, Sustainable tourism,e but also increases more employment and valuable foreign exchange development not only bring, distributes its benefits across the country. The state of Kerala "God's own country" has been chosen by the various reputed travel magazines as "one of the 50 destinations to be visited in a life time". The Government of India and the Government of Kerala has undertaken the task of developing and providing infrastructure facilities for tourism in Kerala by constructing tourist complexes in remote, but areas of heritage and/or religious importance. One such project is the "Construction of Pilgrim Amenity Center at Kulanada" in an undulated terrain. It is located in a convenient area where Pilgrims, on their way to Sabarimala Temple, can halt. During peak seasons of pilgrimage lot of people come here and thus generates substantial employment/livelihood for the local-poor. The pilgrimage, amenity at Kulanada comprising several independent but linked buildings that have been constructed over an undulated terrain with different type of foundation at different depths. This paper discusses about the construction of this tourism facility in a most effective manner, which emphasises the role of structural engineers and its importance in reduction of poverty through promotion of tourism in a state like Kerala.
