Skeletal fixation is performed primarily in the mutilated hand to stabilize not only the fractures, but also the wound. Stable fracture fixation acts as a platform to facilitate bone restoration and the repair or reconstruction of all other soft tissue injuries. Secure fracture fixation also helps to control pain and permits more rapid, intensive, and effective rehabilitation, thus asserting a positive influence upon functional outcome.
