Transmission measurements between 1400 and 2500 cm(-1) using a Fourier transform spectrometer, combined with calculations from a uniaxial transmittance model developed by Lekner, are used to determine the absorption coefficient for the extraordinary-ray of sapphire. Thus, a straightforward new technique is demonstrated for determining the extraordinary-ray absorption coefficient. The results are used to calculate parameters for an empirical multiphonon absorption model. (C) 2000 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
