Self-reflection and recognition

This paper focusses on self-reflection as a determinant of consciousness. Specifically we argue that in reconstructive memory, the basis for inferences is not only provided by schematic knowledge about the world but also by knowledge about the person's own memory. A series of studies by the authors will be used to demonstrate how self-reflective knowledge may influence recognition. It is advocated that "autonoetic consciousness" in memory is not only a function of recalling the episode of encoding but may also be the result of activating semantic self-knowledge.
