Fabricating colorful bulk metallic glass surfaces by femtosecond laser processing

摘要
Here, we report on successful fabrication of colorful bulk metallic glass surfaces through the technique of femtosecond laser processing. The results manifest that with increasing the laser energy density from 0.5 J/mm2 to 8.0 J/mm2, the color of processed Zr based bulk metallic glasses varies from yellow to brown and then green. The mechanism of the surface color transformation can be fundamentally understood in terms of the diffraction efficiency of Bragg originating from various laser energy densities. Our findings provide a facile method for engraving colorful amorphous alloy surfaces, thereby improving the application potentials of such materials.
