Effects of strontium additions on the microstructure and properties of AZ91 magnesium alloy

摘要
This study aims to investigate the effects of strontium additions on microstructure, the soundness and mechanical properties of AZ91 magnesium alloy. The results show that a small amount of strontium addition to AZ91 significantly increases the density, yield strength and hardness. Microstructure observations reveal that the additions of strontium cause a reduction in the grain size. Small grains improve mass feeding, and hence minimize microporosity formation, or increase in the density, in turn, which result in improving mechanical properties.
