Intraoperative video-monitoring of the facial nerve

The aim of the present study is to report clinical experince from the use of an original intraoperative video-monitoring (IVM) system, assessing its advantages and drawbacks in comparison with EMG. The system consists of a double mask placed over the face, equipped with two cameras for detection of eye and mouth movements. The images from cameras are sent to an automatic device for online videoanalysis and alarm. Facial function of 16 patients undergoing various otologic procedures was monitored with both IVM and EMG methods. Data regarding characteristics of each system and intraoperative findings after electrical stimulation permit the Authors to affirm the fairly high sensitivity of IVM and a better specificity in comparison with EMC. Finally, the Authors have found this method safe, easy to set and highly reliable, so that the IVM can be off-line analized and also useful for other cranial nerves.
