Performance differences between new milking parlours

A study has been undertaken to compare two different types of milking cluster technology, varying principally in cluster weight and claw volume, to determine any effects on milking performance and cow behaviour. The clusters were assessed in twenty, different, relatively newly-installed, milking parlours of varying forms, thirteen of which had some farm of indexing. The aim was to provide independent practical assessment and advice for the dairy farmer. Cow acceptance of the parlours varied from obvious discomfort when heavy clusters were used and poor entrance behaviour with lack of incentive to enter, to ready acceptance and good operation. Heavy clusters gave good milk-out tending to over milking. Many problems appeared related to poor cow and cluster position.
