Transport engineers try to transform a complex signal controlled intersection by changing the traffic regulation (reduction of the number of traffic flows and/or collisions) to a problem of a basic intersection. The lack of development of the traffic network often prevents such an approach or the local better solutions create an overall worse situation in a wider area. The most common approach is to transform a complex intersection into a set of combined basic intersections, thus defining the multi-criteria problem or a problem of dynamic programming. An integral solution of problems is usually performed through two phases: the first phase uses the traffic models to determine the coefficients of the objective function and the values of restrictions, and the second phase optimizes the model of intersection. This work will present the application of mixed-integer programming with directly built-in traffic models into the objective function and constraints. In this way a flexible (single-phase) model is obtained which directly uses the traffic indicators and values. A case study will prove the usefulness and usability of the presented model.
