Slavery as an institution.

Coming out of a broader research project on forms of dependence, this methodological article primarily seeks to provide a sufficiently general definition of slaves so as to differentiate slavery from other forms of dependence with which it is often confused. On the basis of data mostly from precolonial black Africa and ancient Greece and Rome, comparative considerations are brought to bear about how the legal status of slaves varies as a function of the type of society.
