The effects of China's trade liberalization on industrial relative wages

This paper analyzes the effects of trade liberalization on industrial relative wages. From theoretical aspect, we analyzed the effect of trade liberalization on output of industries in an imperfect market. Trade liberalization will reduce the output of domestic firm in import-competing industry so as to reduce the demand of workers in this industry, then the relative wages in this trade liberalized industry will decrease. We made an empirical analysis using the data in 33 industries from 1995 to 2000. To import-competing industries, which was original more monopolistic, trade liberalization reduced the wage premium. To export-oriented industries, the increase of export raised the relative wages. Though the relative wages Of import-competing industries decreased than before, but they were still higher than other industries, this implies trade reforms are reasonable.
