摘要
INTRODUCTION:Routinely used radiological diagnostic procedure requires radiation protection for both the radiographer and the patients as well. The knowledge on ionising radiation exposure risks is important for the patients to be known. Aim: The aim of the study was to create radiation protection awareness among the patients visiting the radiology department of a private dental institution. A questionnaire consisting of 10 close ended questions was asked to be filled by the patients while visiting the radiology department. About 65% of the patients were aware that ionising radiations have harmful effects while 35% were unaware. When asked whether they are aware of radiation protection devices such as thyroid collar, lead aprons are available only 35% said yes about 65% were unaware of radiation. Our findings show that awareness on radiation protection equipment among the patients was not adequate. CONCLUSION: Radiation protection measures should be displayed in posters throughout the college and brochures should be spread among the patients.
