The Hvalfjordur subsea Tunnel is a new road tunnel under construction in Iceland. The project involves an approximately 6 km long, sub-sea road tunnel passing beneath Hvalfjordur, a fjord lying in a north-east to south-west direction, located about 30 km west of Reykjavik. This is the first sub-sea tunnel in Iceland. The majority of the tunnel will be through mixed face conditions comprising basalt, scoria (volcanic rocks containing small cavities resulting from gas escape during eruption) and sedimentary (volcanic) rock; Excavation by drill and blast started in June 1996 and the tunnel is due to be completed in 1998/9. This paper describes the technical aspects of the ground conditions, rock support and seismic risk assessment.
