Chromatography as a scientific discipline

The paper considers the evolution of the term "chromatography" starting from the definition of this term given in the pioneering works of M. S. Tsvet and ending in the latest definitions suggested by comissions of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) and the Science Council on Chromatography of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Shortcomings of the official definitions are discussed and anew generalized definition of chromatography as a scientific discipline is proposed that takes into account basic ideas of the definition suggested by M. S. Tsvet.
