Properties of Impulse Creeping Discharge in Palm Fatty Acid Ester Oil/Pressboard Composite Insulation System

The use of environment-friendly liquids has been noticed for oil-filled power transformers. For environmental requirements, new vegetable based insulating oil called PFAE (Palm Fatty Acid Ester) was recently developed as a substitute of mineral oil. This paper describes the properties of creeping discharge in a PFAE/pressboard composite insulation system under the applied impulse voltage with various values of the time of wave front T-f and time to half value of wave tail T-t (T-f=1.2-100 mu s and T-f=50-1000 mu s). The behavior of creeping streamers is significantly affected by the waveform of applied voltages, voltage polarity and pressboard surface morphology. These properties are compared with those in mineral oil and an insulating performance of PFAE oil is evaluated.
