This article traces the development of the comparatively recent field of intellectual endeavor known as the "history of the book," explores its relation to older approaches to the study of books and the printed word, and provides an overview of the kinds of literature currently available on the state of the field. It then gives an account of the relevance of this field of study to librarians and librarianship.
