The authors intend to analyse the necessity of the water resources efficient use in the area of Braila Plain - Romania. The main approached issues are related to the irrigation works. In the last years, due to their length of service - the irrigation works have been carried out during 1971-1973 and put into operation in 1974 - their infrastructure has been damaged, and waste of water due to infiltrating, evaporating and exploiting are significantly bigger, and therefore their efficiency has decreased from about 80 p.c. to about 40 p.c. There are important concerns regarding the rehabilitating and the financing of said works. Braila county soil is facing a damaging process, mainly on two very sensitive areas, respectively on the 68,000 hectares of over-salted soils from Siret river lower meadow, the Danube meadow, Calmatui river meadow, Ianca river Valley and around the salted lakes, as well as on the about 40,000 hectares of sandy soils, out of which 24,000 hectares are flying sands, concentrated in two zones: Bertesti - Spiru Haret - Insuratei Zavoaia - Ulmu - Jugureanu - Ciresu si Rimnicelu - Movila Miresii - Gemenele. Another zone facing same problems is that of about 20,000 hectares situated in the south part of Braila Big Island. The authors point out the fact that a part of the sustainable development is based also on adjusting the agriculture and forestry infrastructure to the new ownership structures appeared due to returning property process which has started after 1990, with a view to increase the competitiveness of agriculture and forestry sectors through modernization and retechnologyzing of irrigation works and of other works of soil amelioration (draining, works against flooding, etc.)
