Challenges in breastfeeding multiples

The benefits of breastfeeding are multiplied in twins and higher-order multiples. Mother and family of multiple births are facing unique and extraordinary physical, emotional and economic demands. They need skillful and continuous assistance during postpartum, infancy and toddler to develop breastfeeding, parenting and household management plan. Feeding and caring for each infant, care of older siblings, delegation of household tasks and rest time for the mother should all be taken into consideration. A social support network to reduce isolation, give help and protect parents' sleep is needed. Coordination and cooperation between health system, community and social support service is necessary to improve the initiation and duration of breastfeeding multiples.
