摘要：

This paper analyzes the Brazilian Portuguese (BrP) item 'capaz' from a semanticpragmatic point of view. We suggest that it can perform three different functions in the BrP grammar: conversational marker, negation and modal. Specifically, here, we exploit the modal behavior of 'capaz', using as theoretical bases the Possible World Semantics (KRATZER, 1981, 1991, 2012) and approaches of Pires de Oliveira & Scarduelli (2008) and Pessotto (2011a, 2011b, 2015) to BrP modals. After discussion, we affirm that the item 'capaz' has modal force of possibility and it expresses the following readings: epistemic, doxastic, epistemic-tacit and physical-intellectual. In this way, 'capaz' is a legitimate BrP modal item that should be included in the set of modals of natural languages.
