Participation of farmers in the improvement of water quality in the Ruisseau Saint-Esprit

The pollution of surface and ground water by agricultural activities has become a major concern during the last decade. One of the approach being examined by the Quebec Ministry of Agriculture (MAPAQ) to accelerate the adoption of environmentally sound practices is a watershed based approach. Two pilot projects have been implemented: the Ruisseau Turmel and Ruisseau St-Esprit watershed projects. The ''Ruisseau St-Esprit'' project involves the participation of farmers residing on the basin, an agronomist, McGill University and MAPAQ. Monies have been allocated by the Quebec Ministry of Agriculture jointly with Canada Agriculture to encourage the activities and conservation efforts of the farmers. This approach seems promising. Farmers' participation has been steady and enthusiastic. It seems that farmer's participation in the decisional process and continuous technical support are key elements in the success of this project.
