Consolidation of mechanically milled TiAl alloys by spark plasma sintering

摘要
In this study, newly developed spark plasma sintering (SPS) technique was introduced to refine grain size of gamma-based TiAl intermetallic compounds. Two prealloyed Ti-46Al-1.5Mo and Ti-46Al-1.5Mo-0.2C(at.%) powders were produced by mechanical milling in high-energy attritor. The mechanically milled powders were characterized by XRD and SEM for the microstructural evolution as a function of milling time. And then, the NMed powders were consolidated by vacuum hot pressing and spark plasma sintering, resulting in the microstructure consisting of the equiaxed gamma-TiAl and alpha(2)-Ti3Al grains, with a few hundred nanometer in average size. The effects of the consolidation techniques on the microstructures and mechanical properties of the MMed materials were discussed.
