In The Gift of Death (originally published in 1992 as Donner la mort), Derrida links the gift to secrecy: “a gift that could be recognized as such in the light of day, a gift destined for recognition, would immediately annul itself. … Secrecy is the last word of the gift which is the last word of the secret.” © 1998 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
