摘要
Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLED) are solid state devices having a great potential for commercial and industrial lighting applications. They are flexible and have an added advantage of not containing any toxic materials and hence are highly sustainable. In this paper, a comparative evaluation is done on the performance of OLED with its popular counterpart Light Emitting Diodes (LED) in terms of luminous emission, efficacy as well as coefficient of utilization (CU) on the basis of similar size and input wattage using the softwares MATLAB and Setfos. The choice of samples were chosen from a wide variety of products that are available in Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) databases. It is observed that, though OLED lags behind LED in terms of magnitude of luminous intensity and efficacy, it has a better CU and is observed to cover a wider area for illumination, making it suitable for luminaire systems near the work plane or even in emergency lighting systems. As OLED is still in the development phase, there are many lighting design softwares that do not have OLED lighting systems in their catalogue, hence MATLAB is a good candidate for analyzing the performance characteristics of OLED presently.
