Backward-wave oscillators (BWOs) have almost been forgotten in the modern world of integrated circuits (ICs) and solid-state architectures. But BWO tubes are superb sources of millimeter-wave radiation and are the signal sources in a line of high-performance millimeter-wave sweep generators from the Russian firm ELVA-1 Ltd. (St. Petersburg, Russia). The company's sweepers and other products are available in the US through The Gilland Group (Felton, CA).
