摘要
Using the example of the literary figure of Soliman from Musil's unfinished novel The man without qualities, the article shows that in this novel Musil takes, on the one hand, a critical attitude towards exoticism by seeing it primarily as a social discourse. On the other hand, however, exotic, even racist modes of representation can also be found in his novel. He updates the historical Soliman from the Age of Enlightenment to an advertising and media figure of the 20th century, but in doing so uses stereotypical ideas about blacks.
