Dizziness in elderly patients from the viewpoint of clinical geriatrics

Symptoms of dizziness in older patients are often multiple. Up to one half of patients report different symptoms. There are strong associations with cardio- and cerebrovascular morbidity, as well as with falling and syncope. The prevalence of frequent causes of dizziness depends strongly on the selection of the patients investigated. In the majority of patients diagnosis can be made by a careful history and physical examination. The value of additional investigations is limited. its use should be targeted. Therapeutic strategies, particularly in patients with multimorbidity and multiple causes of dizziness identified, have the aim to focus on those conditions which are likely to be treatable.
