Correlation between tensile-strength characteristics and dynamic hardness

A device for testing materials for hardness under impact load is described and relationships for the indentor penetration speed, the force of resistance of the material, and the strain rate as a function of the indentor penetration depth are presented. Relationships for the yield strength (sigma(y)) and hardness (ND) of a steel as a function of the strain rate are also presented. The ratio C = HD/sigma(y) under dynamic load was found to be 2.2, which is somewhat smaller than that measured under static conditions.
