摘要
The region of Upper Silesia is practically the only area where underground extraction of hard coal is undertaken, both in Poland and the Czech Republic. This activity results in area degradation. In recent years in Upper Silesia (on both sides of the border) an intensive activity has been carried out, the aim of which is to restore biological processes in these areas, neutralise the existing toxicity and regulate the hydrographic conditions. These problems have been reflected in the provisions of formal and legal requirements which are binding in European Union, i.e. they apply to all EU member states. The article presents the influence of coal waste heaps on the surrounding water structures. Two selected water reservoirs, formed as a result of mining activity on the territory of Poland and the Czech Republic, have been compared.
