Biosecurity on pig and poultry farms: principles for the veterinary profession

The mantra of all veterinary surgeons is 'first do no harm', which embraces the introduction of a novel pathogen to any animal. Veterinary surgeons must aspire to become beyond reproach. Biosecurity mitigates risk and is generally considered the remit of population animal vets, but the truth is that it is the responsibility of all personnel working with animals-veterinary surgeons, nurses, owners and stockpeople. This article aims to prompt discussion to encourage veterinary surgeons to ensure that biosecurity is a key consideration in their professional lives. It also gives guidance on how to develop biosecurity standard operating procedures (SOPs) that can be used on farm.
