Life estimation techniques for transformer insulation

A significant proportion of power transformers are approaching the end of their designed life. However, the Utilities are coming under increasing pressure to delay asset upgrade costs. Therefore, in order to determine whether delaying a replacement for a particular power transformer is safe the Utilities require tools to help them reach this decision. One reason why a power transformer reaches the end of its life is when its paper insulation has degraded to the point where it has lost its tensile strength. The rate at which paper degrades is related to the temperatures within the transformer, the water content and whether or not the transformer is sealed. For this article we investigated the application of a model to determining the remaining life of an old power transformer. The unit failed and so we were able to measure the properties of the paper. Then, we applied our model using estimates to how the water content and temperature distribution changed throughout the life of the transformer. We found close agreement between our model and measurements.
