摘要
The form cuman in line 244b of Beowulf can be interpreted as the infinitive meaning 'come', but then the further analysis of the clause causes considerable difficulties. Therefore Bugge's suggestion that cuman represents the agent noun cuma '(new)comer' deserves reconsideration and may ultimately be correct. The meaning of the predicate ongunnon in line 244b can be given as '(they) behaved'.
