Synthesis, Characterization and CO2 Solubility of [hmim][Tf2N] and [hmim][Ac] Ionic Liquids

Ionic liquids are under intense investigation as a potential replacement for solvents to remove CO2 from natural gas due to their versatility and unique properties. In this paper, the synthesis of ionic liquids containing 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium cation with bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide or acetate are presented. The decomposition temperatures of the ionic liquids are also reported. The solubility of CO2 in the ionic liquids was determined using an equilibrium cell at 298.15K and in the pressures up to about 17 bar. The result shows that 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide has greater affinity towards CO2 than that of 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ionic liquid. Overall the results indicate that the ionic liquids have potential to act as solvents in CO2 separation processes.
