Between gun and gown: NROTC, 1950-1980

Changes to the ROTC program in the Cold War and Vietnam eras were the result of much mon than the protests of student demonstrators, University administrators, military officers, the Congress, and ROTC students themselves each had their own goals and visions for the reform of the ROTC program. Despite important disagreements, all parties involved in the negotiations over ROTC favored reform, not abolition, of the program. Using university archives and military records, Dr. Neiberg argues that serious problems in ROTC pre-dated Vietnam and that much of the change to the program was only indirectly related to the turbulence on American campuses in the 1960s.
