The tendency and geographical distribution of overseas R&D investment of MNCs in China

Until the end of August 2002, at least 65 foreign Multinational Corporations (MNCs) have established 82 overseas R&D units in China, which mainly concentrate in Jing-Jin-Tang Economic Circle headed by Beijing, Yangtze River Delta headed by Shanghai, and Pearl River Delta headed by Guangdong Province. On the basis of previous empirical studies, this paper examines the basic motives and determinants of geographical distribution of overseas R&D investment by MNCs. It is shown that the overseas R&D investment by. MNCs was mainly attracted by two types of factors: the market-oriented/demand-side factors and the technology-oriented/supply-side factors. Through the investigation of the practice of MNCs' R&D investment in China, we found that these factors can also help explain their concentration in the above-mentioned three Chinese regions.
