Long-term survival after simultaneous pancreas and kidney transplantation

The simultaneous transplantation of the pancreas and the kidney performed in our institution between 1973 and 1979 did not result in longterm success. The operations were performed in patients with diabetic nephropathy and terminal renal failure, The same procedure was applied to 13 patients with the same indication in the years 1980, 1981, and 1982. The technique of pancreatic trans plantation was a segmental transplantation with simultaneous or delayed duct occlusion. Five of these patients are still living; 4 of them lost their pancreas transplant function after 4, 5, 9 months and 5 years. respectively One female patient is living 15 years after transplantation with good function of both pancreas and kidney This corresponds to the longest survival after pancreas and kidney transplantation reported in the world literature.
