There are five sections to this article, all of which relate to aspects of place, one of the major concepts of geography (Massey, 1993). The first section looks back on the significance of places to the author in order to discuss the effects of places on his thinking and to develop the concept of place. The second and third sections consider two current pieces of research that involve place and children in different ways. The final two sections look to the future, expressing some concerns about the place of the subject and the place of children in the curriculum.
