Fulfilling the promise of community-based health navigators

The critical nature of the role played by community health workers in the healthcare system cannot be overemphasized. From raising awareness of health and hygiene to disease control, these workers have a wide range of responsibilities. However, they continue to be underpaid and lack the tools, support and incentives to deliver their services. Our extensive field-study in the Indian state of Karnataka among community health workers and the people they serve, provided insight into their unique challenges and how best to mitigate them. Transitioning them into the role of a microentrepreneur and equipping them with innovative tools and solutions, has the potential to enhance not just their lives, but the health of the community.
