A predictive model of corrosion pit geometry of steel in aqueous sodium chloride solution

摘要
Pitting corrosion is known as a destructive type of localized corrosion. This paper presents the prediction of corrosion pit propagation of steel immersed in alkaline solution. With regard to the electrochemical reactions inside a micropit, a two-dimensional model that allows the prediction of pit propagation and its shape is developed. COMSOL Multiphysics version 4.2 is used to solve the Nernst-Planck equations for the potential variations and mass transport. The result of the simulation shows a deep trough formation that suggests a reduction in the corrosion rate after a period of time and the active region inside the pit turning passive.
