The Navy Center of Excellence for Composites Manufacturing Technology (CECMT) has developed a low cost VARTM composite manufacturing technology for military applications. The basic technology was developed under two Navy programs. The first program developed components for a wet sub for SPECWAR applications, and the second program developed fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) rudders for the Navy's Mine Counter Measures (MCM) ships. Based on the results of these first two programs, several new military and commercial projects to advance and implement the technology are underway. This paper details the history, the current state of the technology and the future development plans for this new closed molding process.
