Modern intrauterine devices provide safe, effective, convenient, and cost-effective reversible contraception. The key to success is careful patient selection and counseling. This article provides information about the efficacy, mechanisms of action, and management of side effects for each of the devices currently available. The potential role of newer intrauterine devices is also discussed.
