This article deals with the development of a methodology for product innovation in Small and Medium Size Enterprises (SMEs). Product innovation is achieved within an Integrated Product Development (IPD) process, which can be viewed as a particular application of current engineering. The first part of the paper describes the IPD technique and its application in SMEs. Subsequently, it elaborates on the SMEs' reference model of IPD, which should serve to help establish it within the reality of managing SMEs. The paper concludes with a case study illustration of the application of the IPD methodology in a Brazilian small business environment.
