The fragmentarily preserved Limburgian chivalric epic Aiol (about 1200), a translation/adaptation of the French epic Aiol et Mirabel, is written in iambic metrical feet with four arses. This is a remarkable exception and as far as known the first example in epic poetry in a Germanic language. It is argued that this verse technique is tributary to the medieval Latin and French tradition and that the author intentionally surpasses his models in technical perfection.
