An inexpensive and readily available ionic liquid, tetrabutylammonium bromide in the molten state, efficiently catalyzes the conjugate addition of thiols to alpha,beta-unsaturated nitriles, carboxylic ester, ketones and aldehydes as well as nitro olefins.
