IceCube education and outreach: Bringing neutrinos to the secondary school classroom

The IceCube and AMANDA projects have demonstrated that cutting-edge science, combined with the extreme Antarctic environment, holds great allure for students, teachers, and the general public. A number of different initiatives have been described that target different groups outside the research community. One key to success is to identify scientists, graduate students, and engineers with interest and aptitude for conveying technical material in an accessible way. The Science in the Ice course provides a structured, organized setting to enhance interactions between AMANDA and IceCube personnel and teachers that maximizes the time investment of all involved. Outreach to the general public is also continuing with efforts to develop a museum display with the AMANDA scale model event viewer. The DESY short film and Exploratorium Origins provide synchronous access to material that is professionally done and captures the excitement of probing the unknown. © 2004 Elsevier B.V.
