Plasma scattering measurement by using a submillimeter wave gyrotron as a radiation source

Gyrotron FU II is applied as a submillimeter wave radiation source to plasma scattering measurement for the Compact Helical System (CHS) in National Institute for Fusion Science (NIFS) in Japan. The stabilization of gyrotron output and high quality probe beam are required to improve the performance of the measurement. The outputs (cw operation, f=301GHz, Psimilar to20W) of the Gyrotron FU IV are stabilized (DeltaP/Psimilar to1%, Deltafsimilar to10kHz) by decreasing the fluctuations of the potentials (DeltaV(k)similar to0.6V, DeltaV(a)similar to0.2V), via introducing smoothing circuits consisting of a resistor, an induction coil and a capacitor. Further stabilization of output frequency (Deltaf<1kHz) is attained by applying phase lock loop. A high purity mode operation is a prerequisite for effective conversion of the output radiation into the probe beam of scattering measurement. We have constructed a new gyrotron, namely, Gyrotron FU VA, which has a carefully designed resonant cavity. The measurements of the radiation patterns have confirmed high-purity mode operations.
