摘要
Path constitution proposes a general understanding of field-level mechanisms shaping technological emergence by integrating both deliberate actions and emergent evolution. However, the negotiations that shaped the path are generally considered globally and limited to resource mobilization. Furthermore, the specific influence dynamics explaining either the persistence of one or co-existence of several alternatives are not fully understood. A 12-year longitudinal study of the emergence of near-field communication (NFC) technology addresses those issues. We outline patterns of influence dynamics and their expected outcomes on the path (stabilization or flexibility). Then, the performance of influence tactics is determined by both the degree of interrelatedness among properties and the broader environment changes. The outcome of influence tactics on one property, either stabilization or flexibility, may constrain or rather re-open negotiations of another property, determining its outcome. Thus, our work contributes to both path constitution analysis and process studies on power in inter-organizational settings.
